CHAPTER TWELVE

Girard had called her to advise that they found skeletal remains less than two metres from the GPS coordinates listed on Mercado’s app. When Murphy arrived, she saw a half-dozen different media people all waiting for information that no one yet had. She quickly checked herself in her visor mirror and exited the Brawler to speak with media. “We are conducting a recovery search in the forest,” she said. “When that search is complete, you will be updated with what, if anything, was found in the area.”

The atmosphere was intense as reporters gathered closer, eagerly anticipating a chance to question the detective. Cameras were trained on Murphy as microphones and cell phones were shoved into her face.

“Was this a homicide?”

“Any leads on possible suspects?”

“Detective Murphy, can you tell us the victim’s identity?”

“What weapon was used?”

“Is the public in danger?”

“How long do you expect the investigation to take?”

The barrage of questions continued, each reporter trying to outdo the other, shouting out their queries and talking over one another in the quest for exclusive information. But Murphy stood her ground, maintaining her silence. Her expression was unwavering, giving away nothing. The clamor around her only grew, as the reporters pushed for answers, hoping to get the scoop.

“An official statement is forthcoming. Excuse me.”

The forest seemed vast and indistinct, with trees that towered high above and roots that twisted into the rocky terrain below. The air was crisp and clean, with the smell of pine wafting through the breeze. The path was rough, with boggy sections deep enough to lose a boot if you weren’t careful.

Amidst the trees, there was a quiet stillness, broken only by the occasional wisp of a voice carried along the rustling of leaves in the wind. The forest floor was littered with fallen branches and rocks covered by a thick carpet of greenery.

The trees themselves were a wonder to behold. White birch trees stood tall and proud, their paper-like bark peeling away to reveal a smooth, creamy trunk. Thick black spruce trees towered overhead, their branches stretching out like fingers toward the sky. And everywhere there were white pine trees, with their needles shining like emeralds in the sun. Moose and caribou would have roamed the area freely if not for the buzz of humanity brought by death.

In the forest’s heart was a small gathering of people, surrounded by a ring of plastic police tape. Girard and Parker stood outside the ring, watching Dr. Chen and his team work the scene. Hamilton stood further away, staring into the woods.

Here, the ground was soft and mossy, with tiny wildflowers peeking up from the ground. It was a peaceful spot, a place of stillness in the thick wildness of the forest. The maple tree roots wove their way through small boulders, arching under and over, creating perfect natural refuges for all manner of small creatures.

The sun was casting a warm glow over everything around her. It seemed like a good place to leave the flowers she had brought with her, away from the calculating gaze of the media, but still close enough to appease her soul.
